FCC Family Support Committee:  Books for Children

“A book holds a house of gold” – Chinese proverb

Reading with your child is one of the greatest pleasures of being a parent. But in the past, it was difficult to find books for children that represented all families and cultures.  Fortunately, that has changed, as authors are now writing children’s books which reflect the wonderful range of families, children and experiences.

The FCC Nova Scotia – Family Support Committee has compiled a list of books with adoption themes, books with Chinese children as main characters, book celebrating difference, and books about China.  We have not read all of these books; some have been included based on reviews from other adoption booklists and online reviews by readers. Some books may present ideas or perspectives which are not consistent with your family’s philosophy about adoption or with your child’s age and level of understanding.

We recommend that you read descriptions or reviews of the books before reading to your children. A good source of online descriptions and reviews is www.amazon.ca. Also, many of these books are available through public libraries, and the library catalogues can be searched online. For the websites for Nova Scotia’s regional public libraries go to: http://www.library.ns.ca/regionals/index.htm

If you have a favorite we have missed, please let us know at familysupport@fccns.ca.
